When Life Gives Birth to Itself – On Hens, Cycles & the Primal Feminine Power in Ayurveda

July 7, 2025

Something wondrous happened recently:
A strange hen built a nest in our garden in Mallorca. Without us knowing. Without an invitation.
And today, days later: 10 tiny chicks. Life born of itself – sheltered by a garden that simply existed.

What may seem curious at first glance is, in truth, a powerful symbol of the feminine life force:
To birth. To nourish. To trust. To return. Just as the hen follows its inner intelligence, so too do we as women carry a natural rhythm that connects with the lunar cycle and the rhythm of the Earth. Ayurveda recognizes this force as the foundation of feminine healing – reminding us of the deep wisdom that lives in our womb space, when we learn to listen.

Cycle, Moon & Apāna Vāta: The Secret Lies in the Downward Flow

In Ayurveda, the female cycle is governed by Apāna Vāta – the subtle energy that moves downward: menstruation, birth, elimination, and release. When Apāna is blocked, the flow is disrupted. Menstruation becomes painful, irregular, or may stop entirely. Emotional symptoms like irritability, fatigue, or withdrawal may also appear – signs that Apāna is not flowing freely.
But nature herself shows us how to restore this flow: through rest, grounding, warmth – and reconnection with the moon.

“The feminine nature is tuned to the rhythm of the moon. Our blood is moonlight.”
– Maya Tiwari, Women’s Power to Heal

The female cycle ideally mirrors the phases of the moon:

  • New Moon – Bleeding: Time of stillness, cleansing, inner reflection
  • Waxing Moon – Building: Energy returns, Rasa is nourished
  • Full Moon – Ovulation: Abundance, creativity, expansion
  • Waning Moon – Releasing: Preparation for the next bleed

This rhythmic connection is more than symbolic – it’s biological, emotional, and spiritual.
The more we live in tune with the moon, the clearer our inner rhythm becomes – and the more we awaken to our innate intuition.

Rasa & Rakta: The Source of Cycle, Fertility and Sensuality

In Ayurvedic women’s health, two tissues are essential to the cycle: Rasa Dhatu (the subtle essence) and Rakta Dhatu (the blood). Rasa is the first tissue formed after digestion – it nourishes the body, mind, and senses. Rakta is refined from Rasa – a more mature, purified blood. It carries vital force, hormones, and cycle energy.
A healthy cycle arises when we:

  • Nourish Rasa → with warm, fluid, lovingly prepared food, a calm lifestyle, and emotional safety
  • Strengthen and purify Rakta → with herbs, mindful movement, and cyclical rest

“When a woman reclaims her lunar rhythm, she remembers how to heal herself.”
– Maya Tiwari

The Hen in the Garden – A Symbol of Cyclical Intelligence

Back to the hen. She came uninvited, found a safe place, settled in – and brought forth life. Not planned. Not controlled. Simply following her natural instinct. This is feminine power: It doesn’t follow the will of the mind, but the intelligence of the body, the heart, the earth.

Our cycle, too, is not something we must manage – but rather something we are invited to honor, listen to, and support. When we create space – like our garden – life emerges: new creativity, inner clarity, emotional growth, or physical fertility.
